GARY, Ind. — A proposed casino in Gary is one step closer to reality.

Yesterday the Indiana Gaming Commission approved a plan to relocate and consolidate two Majestic Star casinos in Lake County into one operation in Gary called the Hard Rock Casino.

Spectacle Entertainment is expected to hire some 18-hundred Hoosiers when the new casino is built. Ground breaking is expected to happen later this year with the first phase of construction expected to be done by late 2020.

The second phase will include a hotel and parking garage with construction expected to commence in 2022 or 2023.

The commission is also accepting proposals for a new casino to be built in Terre Haute, since state lawmakers approved a plan to move one of the Lake County licenses to Vigo County as long as Gary approved.  Voters in Vigo County still have go give their approval for a casino to be built.  They will have their chance to do that when the vote in a referendum in November.
