INDIANAPOLIS – Your child’s school would have to test the water fountains for lead under a bill headed for the Senate floor.

The House has already passed a nearly-identical bill to require lead testing. About two-thirds of Indiana schools have already checked their water — the state has a grant program to pay for it. Hammond Representative Carolyn Jackson says about a dozen schools who had been putting it off sent in applications within the last few months after the state sent a reminder. She says she doesn’t know why the others haven’t, but her bill would order them to stop putting it off.

The bill would direct schools to apply for state or federal grants for lead testing, and to take action if the lead content is above federal standards.

The Senate could vote as early as Thursday, though it’s made some minor changes to the wording which would send it back to the House before it goes to Governor Holcomb.
