TERRE HAUTE-Wanda Jean Samford, 85, of Terre Haute, Indiana passed away peacefully Saturday, May 22, 2021 at Cobblestone Crossings Health Campus.
She retired from Columbia Records in Terre Haute before moving to Murfreesboro, TN where she supported the family business as a bookkeeper.
She was born November 5, 1935 in Chrisman, Illinois to the late James Edward Berry and Maxine Helen Gebhart Berry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Dale Samford, brother Floyd “Bud” Berry and sister, Shirley Rush.
Survivors include her children, Gerry (Sandy) Peters of Dana, Rick (Lynn) Peters of Terre Haute, Ron Peters of Wurtsboro, New York and Sherry (Jay) Grate of Fremont; step-daughter, Linda McAnly of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; brother, James V. (Gladys) Berry of Lockport, Illinois; 9 grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
She was a 1953 graduate of Dana High School and later worked for Hamersley’s Grocery and the St. Bernice Sewing factory. A strong woman of faith, she served the Lord by using her musical gifts of singing and playing the piano at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Manchester, TN. Upon returning to Indiana she became an active member of the Bible Baptist Church in Terre Haute where she sang in the choir and enjoyed helping in the church garden. She cherished her relationships with family and friends, staying connected through cards, calls, and traveling adventures over the years. She had a passion for serving in the community as well. She was a member of the Dana DAMES club, active with the Dana Alumni Association, and worked the polls at election time. Her hobbies included baking, crafting and crocheting-using her heart and hands. An inspiration for others, she was a devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother.
Services will be 10:00 am Friday, May 28, at Overpeck-Gooch Funeral Home, 225 N. Maple Street, Dana, with Pastor Kevin Szwarga officiating. Burial will follow at Bono Cemetery, Dana. Visitation is 4-8 pm Thursday at Overpeck-Gooch Funeral Home.
