INDIANAPOLIS– Elizabeth Mahoney, President of Conserve Indiana and the River Park Neighborhood Association, an Indianapolis floodplain community, has added her voice to those in opposition to the amendment that would redefine what a wetland is.

“As spring rains arrive and the rivers rise above flood stage, those of us living and working in floodplain communities cannot afford another greed-driven assault to Indiana wetlands by special interests and the Indiana state legislature,” she told DLC Media News. “Our homes and livelihoods are at risk. Call/write your state Representative by Monday. Tell them to strip the wetlands language from Senate Bill 414 or vote no on the bill.”

Democrats, other conservation groups and some business leaders are speaking out in opposition to the amendment that was attached to Senate Bill 414.

The organizations opposing passage of the bill with the amendment intact include Greg Ellis, vice president of environment and energy policy for the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, Indra Frank, environmental health and water policy director for the Hoosier Environmental Council, and Rep. Maureen Bauer, a Democrat from South Bend.
