STATEWIDE — Today is the first day you are able to file your taxes for 2021.

Before you get the ball rolling on your taxes, an Indianapolis accountant is reminding you of a few things you need to be aware of. For starters, Shana Bowling of Global Tax Services say’s that you should probably file your taxes sooner rather than later.

“The IRS has a shortage of people that can process tax returns,” Bowling said. “Because they have a backlog from last year and even the year before that when the pandemic first hit.”

The sooner you file, the sooner you can get your refund, she says. Bowling also added that you need to make sure you have your paperwork in order if you received a child tax credit in 2021.

“You were to receive a letter in the mail, it’s a 6419 letter, that you definitely need to have with your tax filing,” she said. “If you don’t that with your tax filing it’ll cause delays.”

Finally, she wants you to be aware that if you took out funds from investing in cryptocurrency you need to have certain tax forms for that too when you file.
