W. Wayne Wheat of Louisville, KY, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on May 16, 2023, at the age of 71. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Wayne was born on January 19, 1952, in Terre Haute, IN, to Eleanor J. Wheat McPike and James W. Wheat. From an early age, Wayne exhibited a passion for sports and community, while also working in support of the family Lumbar Yard business. He was a Boy Scout achieving Eagle Scout rank and was a member of Jaycees, all of which shaped his hard-working, loyal and positive approach to life.
Wayne attended Rosedale High School, where he graduated in 1970. During his high school years, Wayne’s athletic prowess was evident as he excelled in baseball, basketball and track, leaving a lasting impact on teammates and coaches.
After graduation, Wayne continued his educational journey at Pepperdine University, where he played college baseball and basketball. His dedication and talent led him to further pursue his passion for baseball at Indiana State University, where he graduated in 1975 with a degree in Physical Education and Criminology. Wayne’s time as a collegiate athlete not only shaped his skills but also cultivated his remarkable work ethic and determination.
Following his studies, Wayne embarked on a successful career at Duke Energy, where he dedicated more than 20 years of his life. Along the way he held the role of gas controller in Houston, TX and steadily rose through the ranks, ultimately retiring as a Plant Area Supervisor in Ohio and Maryland.
Outside of his professional life, Wayne found the greatest joy in his family. He was a loving husband to his wife of 47 years, Debra G. Wheat. Their enduring partnership was a testament to their love and support for each other. Wayne’s children, Stacey (Clint) Wheat Dickens and Curtis (Cassidy) Wheat, were his pride and joy. He cherished them, instilling in them the values of hard work, integrity, and compassion. Wayne’s love extended to his six grandchildren, Keeley, Morgan, and Olivia Dickens, and Case, Cade, and Cam Wheat.
In addition to his immediate family, Wayne is survived by his sisters, Kathy (Jim) Fagg, Sarah (Gary) Stevenson, and Becky (Loy) Ash. Their bond as siblings was unbreakable, and they shared many laughter-filled moments and supported each other through life’s ups and downs.
Wayne is preceded in death by his mother, Eleanor J. Wheat McPike and father, James W. Wheat. As well as his brother, Jay Wheat.
Wayne will be remembered for his quick wit, competitive spirit, and positive mantras. We will forever carry Wayne’s spirit within us, cherishing the love and memories he gifted us. His legacy will live on in our hearts forever.
Funeral services to honor Wayne’s life will be held on Monday May 22, beginning with Visitation at 12pm and Funeral Service at 2pm, at Cottrell Gooch Funeral Home, 281 N Main St, Rosedale, IN 47874. The burial will take place immediately following at Memory Garden, 936 Walton St, Rockville, IN 47872. The family invites friends, relatives, and acquaintances to join them in celebrating Wayne’s life and sharing cherished memories.
